12 Yard Skip Hire

A 12 yard skip, often called a maxi skip, holds twelve cubic yards of waste, roughly 100 to 120 filled bin bags. It is for light, bulky waste only: no soil, rubble or concrete. It is usually placed on a driveway or private land, as councils set size limits for skips on the road.

What is a 12 yard skip?

A 12 yard skip holds twelve cubic yards of waste. It is typically about 12 to 13 ft long, 6 to 6.5 ft wide and 5.5 to 6.5 ft high, so it is much taller than smaller skips. Many suppliers call it a maxi skip.

Light and bulky waste only

Twelve cubic yards of soil, rubble or concrete would weigh far more than a skip lorry can lift or legally carry, so skip firms don't accept heavy waste in a 12 yard skip. If part of your load is heavy, put that portion in a 6 yard skip or smaller, and use this size for the rest.

What a 12 yard skip suits

  • Full house and probate clearances
  • Office and shop strip-outs with furniture
  • Bulky packaging, cardboard and polystyrene
  • Timber, pallets and joinery
  • Large renovations producing mostly light waste

Placement and loading

A 12 yard skip usually goes on a driveway or private land. Councils set their own size limits for skips on the road, usually a maximum length and width, and some cap road skips at 8 yards, so check with the skip firm before planning a road placement. The lorry also needs plenty of clear space to lower it. With sides up to about 6.5 ft high, heavy or awkward items have to be lifted over the top unless the skip has a drop door, so ask the supplier if you are clearing large furniture. See our skip permit guide.

The fill line

Load the skip level with its sides and no higher. An overloaded skip cannot be legally carried, and the driver can refuse to collect it until the excess is removed. Some items cannot go in any skip at all, so check what can and cannot go in a skip before you start loading.

Other sizes

For road placement or some heavy waste, an 8 yard skip. For larger volumes on a site, a roll-on roll-off container. Not sure? See our guide to skip sizes.

12 yard skip questions

Can you put rubble in a 12 yard skip?

No. A 12 yard skip is for light, bulky waste only. Soil, rubble and concrete would make it too heavy to lift.

How many bin bags fit in a 12 yard skip?

Roughly 100 to 120 filled bin bags.

Can a 12 yard skip go on the road?

Only where the council allows it. Councils set their own size limits for skips on the road, and some cap them at 8 yards, so most 12 yard skips go on driveways or private land. The skip firm will know the local rules.
