An island city
Most of Portsmouth sits on Portsea Island, linked to the mainland by the M275, the A3 and the A2030. Every skip lorry comes in over one of them, so traffic at those points can affect delivery times. Give your supplier a time window rather than an exact slot.
Skip licences through Colas
Portsmouth City Council's highway licences, including skips, are handled by its highways partner Colas. The council doesn't publish the skip licence fee, so ask your supplier what's included. Applications can also be made through GOV.UK.
Terraced streets
Southsea, Fratton and North End are dense terraced streets where parking is tight, so a skip on the road may mean suspending a bay. On very narrow roads, a skip bag or wait and load collection can be easier.
The city centre Clean Air Zone
A small Class B Clean Air Zone in the city centre charges non-compliant lorries £50 a day. Outside it, there's no charge. See the skip permit guide for the general rules on skips on the highway.
