Waste carrier registration in Wales
Waste firms based in Wales register with Natural Resources Wales rather than the Environment Agency. The registration covers the whole of Great Britain, so a firm based in England working here will hold an Environment Agency registration instead. Either carries the same legal weight: check the supplier's registration is current before you hand waste over.
Permits in Barry
Barry is in the Vale of Glamorgan, so skip permits come from Vale of Glamorgan Council rather than Cardiff Council, even though the two sit side by side. Only a registered skip company can apply for a Vale of Glamorgan skip licence, which costs £80 for one month and needs at least one working day's notice, so ask your supplier whether the cost is included. See the skip permit guide.
Placing a skip in Barry
The older terraced streets around the town centre have little off-street space, so a road permit is often needed there. Newer estates towards Rhoose and the outskirts more often have driveways that take a skip without a permit.
Choosing a size
For heavy waste like soil or rubble, most suppliers limit you to a smaller skip, often 6 yards or less, because weight rather than volume is the limit. The size guide works it out from what you are clearing.
