One licence for most of the county

Outside Southampton and Portsmouth, skip licences in Hampshire come from Hampshire County Council, not your district or borough council. Only operators on the county's approved list can apply, and they need at least 5 clear working days' notice. The licence costs £78.80 for the application and first week, then £26 for each extra week, with a £48.80 fast track for a one working day turnaround.

The county's conditions are strict: skips no bigger than 5 by 2 metres, amber lamps at each corner and three cones, and removal within 2 working days of being filled.

Southampton and Portsmouth are different

The two cities are unitary councils with their own rules. Southampton charges £37 a week through registered operators, and Portsmouth's licences are handled by its highways partner, with a small Clean Air Zone in the city centre. See skip hire in Southampton and skip hire in Portsmouth.

National parks and rural lanes

Parts of Hampshire lie in the New Forest and South Downs National Parks. Skip licences there still come from the county council, but narrow rural lanes can limit the size of lorry that can reach you. Tell the supplier about the access when you enquire.

A skip on your own drive or land needs no licence anywhere in the county. The size guide works out the right size.
