Birmingham's 7 day skip permit
A skip on the road or pavement needs a permit from Birmingham City Council, and only a registered skip operator can apply for one, so your supplier handles it. The council's page for skip operators lists the permit at £42 per week, and a permit lasts a maximum of 7 days; keep the skip longer and a new permit is needed. The council asks for applications 5 days before the start date, and a retrospective permit costs far more (£238 per week), so book early rather than on the day.
The Clean Air Zone
Inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, Birmingham's Class D Clean Air Zone charges lorries that don't meet the emission standards £50 a day. If your job is in the city centre, ask whether any zone charge is included in the price.
No drive? Plan for the road
Across much of inner Birmingham, homes open straight onto the pavement, so the skip goes on the road under permit. Where you have a drive, a skip on private land needs no permit at all. Taking a van load to the council tips instead means booking a slot first, which is one reason many people find a skip simpler for a big clear-out.
