Allow two weeks for a road permit
Newcastle City Council's skip permit costs £40 and lasts up to 28 days, but processing takes around 10 weekdays, so a skip on the road can't usually arrive tomorrow. The skip hire company normally applies, because the council requires £5 million public liability insurance. If your skip can go on a drive or private land, no permit is needed and delivery can be much quicker.
Tyneside flats and terraces
Heaton, Jesmond and Fenham are full of Tyneside flats and terraced streets without driveways, so most skips there go on the road. In student areas, end-of-tenancy clear-outs peak in early summer, so book ahead then.
The Tyneside Clean Air Zone
Newcastle and Gateshead share a Class C Clean Air Zone, where non-compliant lorries pay £50 a day and vans £12.50. If your job is in the zone, ask whether the supplier's vehicles are compliant or whether a charge is added.
Skip or tip?
Only one of the city's three recycling centres, Brunswick, accepts vans, and then with a permit, so for a large clear-out a skip is often the easier route. Check what can go in a skip before you start loading.
