Crossing the Tyne
Newcastle and Gateshead share the Tyneside Clean Air Zone, which covers most of Newcastle city centre and the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges. A lorry that doesn't meet the standards pays £50 a day, so a skip crossing the river from a yard on the other bank can cost more. Ask your supplier if their vehicles are compliant.
Permits by council
Each of the five councils licenses skips separately, and in practice the skip company handles the application:
- Newcastle: £40 for up to 28 days, with about 10 weekdays to process. See skip hire in Newcastle.
- Gateshead: £40 for up to 28 days (less for operators in the council's scheme), with a same-day service for members. Skips can only stand on a grass verge from April to September, for up to 14 days.
- Sunderland: from £34 for 14 days, and £335 for a retrospective licence. See skip hire in Sunderland.
- North Tyneside (Tynemouth, North Shields, Whitley Bay, Wallsend) and South Tyneside (South Shields, Jarrow, Hebburn): North Tyneside requires operators to register with the council, and South Tyneside aims to process applications in 2 working days. Neither shows a fee on its skip permit web page, so ask whether it's in your quote.
Verges in winter
Gateshead's ban on skips on grass verges from October to March matters on estates where the verge is the only space outside the house. A skip on your own drive needs no permit at all. The size guide will help you choose.
