Permits in Manchester
Manchester City Council issues the permit for any skip standing on a public road, verge or footway. The skip company must apply for the permit, not you, so ask whether the cost is included and how much notice they need.
In Manchester city centre a skip cannot be left on the street at all, only filled while the lorry waits, and other restricted locations need the council's approval at least 10 days in advance.
Choosing a size
An 8 yard is the usual answer for a renovation or house clearance. For soil, rubble or tiling, drop to a 6 yard or smaller, because heavy waste reaches the lifting limit long before the skip looks full. The size guide works it out properly.
