Permits and the clean air zone
Bristol City Council issues permits for skips on the highway, and only the company that owns the skip can apply, so your supplier handles it. Bristol also operates a clean air zone covering the city centre. It affects the lorry rather than you, but it is one reason prices can differ between operators.
Neighbouring authorities set their own permit costs and notice periods, so a job in Keynsham or Portishead may differ from one in the city. Ask the supplier how they handle the permit for your address.
Access on Bristol streets
Clifton, Montpelier and Totterdown have steep gradients and narrow terraced streets where a full-size lorry cannot always reach or safely place a skip. If access is tight, a mini or 4 yard delivered on a smaller vehicle is often the only workable option, and it is worth mentioning when you enquire.
For soil, rubble or a patio lift, stay at 6 yard or below. Weight, not volume, is the limit. The size guide explains why.
