Hills change everything
Sheffield's steep streets decide where a skip can safely stand. A skip needs level, firm ground, and a lorry needs room to lower it without sliding, so on a steep drive or hill road tell the supplier the gradient when you enquire. They may suggest a smaller skip, a different spot or a wait and load collection instead.
Permits from Sheffield City Council
Only the skip operator can apply to put a skip on the highway; the council won't accept applications from the person hiring it. A permit costs £17 and covers up to 15 days, and another £17 extends it by up to 15 more. If the skip has to go in a pay and display bay or on yellow lines, extra charges apply, so mention it early.
Inside the inner ring road
The city centre is a Class C Clean Air Zone, where non-compliant lorries pay £50 a day. It doesn't affect most suburbs, but for a job in the centre, confirm the quote includes any charge.
Terraces and student lets
Crookes, Walkley and Broomhill are packed with terraced houses and shared lets. Light, bulky end-of-tenancy waste suits a bigger skip; soil and rubble from a garden needs a small one, because weight is the limit. See the size guide.
