Four councils, four permit prices

South Yorkshire's four councils each issue their own skip permits for the roads they look after, and only skip companies can apply:

  • Sheffield: £17 for up to 15 days. See skip hire in Sheffield for the city's hills and Clean Air Zone.
  • Rotherham: £28 for up to two weeks.
  • Doncaster: £21 per permit at the council's last published rate, with up to 7 days to process. Skips can be no bigger than 5 by 2 metres and not within 15 metres of a junction without permission.
  • Barnsley: £38 for up to 7 or 14 days depending on the street, or £106 if the skip is already down. Email applications must arrive before 12pm the day before.

Towns across the county

Suppliers here cover far more than the four main towns: Thorne, Mexborough and Bawtry around Doncaster; Wath-upon-Dearne and Maltby near Rotherham; Penistone, Wombwell and Hoyland in Barnsley's borough. Search your postcode to see who delivers to your street. On the western edge, parts of Barnsley's borough reach into the Peak District, where lanes can be narrow, so describe the access when you enquire.

Sheffield's Clean Air Zone

Only Sheffield city centre, inside the inner ring road, is in a Clean Air Zone. A lorry that isn't compliant pays £50 a day there. Jobs elsewhere in the county aren't affected. The skip permit guide covers the rules that apply everywhere.
