Tenements and the street
Almost two thirds of Edinburgh households live in flats, well above the Scottish average of 37%, so in tenement areas such as Marchmont, Leith and Bruntsfield the skip nearly always goes on the street. That brings strict council rules into play.
City of Edinburgh Council's rules
The skip hire company applies, at least 5 working days ahead. A permit costs £46 for the first week and £40 for each further week or part week. Skips can't go on Greenways, Clearways or double yellow lines, a parking bay needs a paid suspension, the maximum size is 5 by 2 metres, and a full skip must be removed within two working days. Near the tram lines, separate approval from Edinburgh Trams is needed.
Low Emission Zone
The city centre Low Emission Zone runs 24 hours a day. Lorries must meet Euro 6 or the operator is fined, starting at £60. It's the supplier's responsibility, but worth checking for a city centre job.
SEPA registration
In Scotland, waste carriers are authorised by SEPA rather than the Environment Agency. Ask for the supplier's SEPA details before you hand over any waste.
