Town centres cost a little more
Wigan Council charges £58 for a skip licence lasting up to 28 days, rising to £65 in Wigan or Leigh town centres. The skip company applies, with 2 working days' notice. Warning lights are required from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise.
When you don't need a licence
A skip on your own drive needs no licence, and nor does one on an unadopted road, a private road the council doesn't maintain. If your street is unadopted, say so when you enquire: it can save the fee.
Taking it to the tip instead
Wigan runs its own tip rules, separate from the rest of Greater Manchester. Each waste permit covers one visit, and vans must be under 3.5 tonnes. For a full house or garden clear-out, one skip usually beats several permitted trips. Read what can go in a skip before loading.
