Same-day permits
Wirral Council is unusually flexible: a registered skip company can apply for a permit up to the end of the working day the skip is placed. After that, a £65 retrospective fee is added. A permit costs £53.25 for 14 days for skips of 6 tonnes or more, or £35.40 for mini skips under 6 tonnes.
The rules on the road
Operators need at least £5 million public liability insurance. Skips can be no bigger than 5 by 2 metres, must be at least 20 metres from a junction or crossing zig-zags, and need four lamps after dark. A full skip must be collected within 1 working day.
Conservation areas
Wirral has 26 conservation areas. Hamilton Square in Birkenhead and Port Sunlight are of national importance, and West Kirby and Heswall Lower Village are protected too. Placement in these streets needs care.
A job on the Wirral is a separate permit from one in Liverpool, even with the same supplier. See skip hire across Merseyside.
