Kirklees sets a high bar
Kirklees Council only licenses skip owners with at least £10 million public liability insurance, a waste carrier licence and a goods vehicle operator licence. A licence costs £31 for up to 14 days or £46 for up to 28 days, with 2 working days' notice. An unlicensed skip costs £110, and getting back an impounded one costs £577.
What the skip must look like
Skips can be no bigger than 5 by 2 metres, with yellow ends and reflective chevrons, coned at all times and lit after dark. Breaking the rules can lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
Valleys and hills
Kirklees' towns grew up as mill towns along the Colne, Holme, Calder and Spen valleys, so steep streets are common. South-west of Meltham and Holme, the countryside is inside the Peak District National Park. Tell the supplier about any gradient when you book.
For heavy waste on a hillside, a smaller skip is safer: see the size guide.
