Six towns, one council

Stoke-on-Trent was formed in 1910 by joining six pottery towns, so it has no single centre. For skip hire that makes little difference, because Stoke-on-Trent City Council licenses skips across all six. Just make sure your supplier covers your town: a yard in Longton may not deliver to Tunstall at the same price.

A two week licence

A skip on the highway needs a licence costing £40 for up to two weeks, applied for by the skip operator with at least three working days' notice. The council checks the location is suitable before the skip goes out. The skip must carry reflective plates, the operator's details and lights at the corners.

Plan the timing

With a two week limit, longer jobs need planning: fill and swap rather than letting one skip stand. An exchange with a fresh skip avoids overfilling, which suppliers won't lift.
