Oldham's registered operator scheme
Oldham Council runs a registration scheme: an operator pays £250 a year to register, then £47 per permit. An unregistered one-off permit costs £145, and a retrospective permit after an officer's visit is £150. Only registered operators with at least £5 million public liability insurance can apply, so a local supplier who registers is usually cheapest.
Rules on the street
A permit runs from 1 to 28 days. The skip needs amber lamps and four traffic cones, and it can't stand within 15 metres of a junction. On tight terraced grids that junction rule can decide which house frontage the skip goes outside.
Hills and villages
From the town centre up into Saddleworth, the land rises into the Pennines. If your road is steep or narrow, describe it when you enquire so the supplier sends the right lorry. The size guide explains why heavy loads need a smaller skip.
